Enjoy a More Comfortable Experience with Sedation Dentistry

Patients of all ages can experience anxiety related to visiting the dentist. Others suffer from conditions such as arthritis that make it uncomfortable to sit for long periods in a dentist's chair. Sedation dentistry induces a state of relaxation so that you can undergo necessary procedures without feeling anxious or physically uncomfortable. At Bivens Dentistry in Mt. Juliet, TN, we offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation to help you have the most comfortable experience possible under our care. Dr. Shaun Bivens and his team are here to help you achieve the healthy, attractive smile you deserve.

Sedation can help you achieve a comfortable state of near-sleep in the dentist's chair.

Types of Sedation We Offer

We offer two sedation dentistry methods:

Nitrous Oxide
Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a face mask. Nitrous oxide sedation is approved for both adults and children by the American Dental Association. During treatment, the doctor can closely monitor and control the amount of sedation you receive. It will only take a few minutes for the effects of sedation to wear off after treatment, so you can drive yourself home afterward.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation induces a deeper state of relaxation. It involves taking a pill before your dental appointment. Often, this treatment causes patients to remember very little, if anything, about their procedure. The effects take longer to subside, so you will need a friend or family member to drive you home.

If you are nervous about your procedure or struggle with another condition that makes it difficult to undergo dental treatment, we encourage you to be forward about it with Dr. Bivens, During your consultation, he can determine if sedation is right for you, and recommend the most appropriate type.

Is Sedation Right for You?

Many patients can benefit from using sedation, including those who suffer from:

  • Dental phobia
  • Claustrophobia
  • Fear of needles
  • Sensitive gag reflex
  • Back problems
  • Arthritis
  • Difficulty controlling movements

Additionally, sedation may be recommended if you are undergoing an extensive procedure such as a full mouth reconstruction.

Your oral health has an important influence on your overall health, and we believe in doing all that we can to make sure you receive the care you need.
